Allen Ginsberg: Voice
Music, Voice and production: Miho Hatori
Written by Allen Ginsberg and Miho Hatori

Coincidentally, my friend lived on the same floor as Mr. Allen Ginsberg (opposite door). I happened to be there when Mr. Ginsberg passed away. The open door was open (for his soul could go out from the door). We could see Tibetan monks chanting and standing around him. I will never forget this memory in my life. And here, 26 years later, the beautiful opportunity to create this song came to me.

I was very attracted to the title: IRON, an artificial object, a symbol of American modernism (industry, the transportation technology of the railroad, technology), and HORSE, nature (uncontrollable), an animal with physicality, a wild, free-roaming, feral creature.
It's as if the title explores the human position on the earth then.

I felt and visualized the history, weight, and hope of being in America in his voice. As I listened to it repeatedly, I began to feel more of his passion, his responsibility as a poet, and a kind of obligation (in a good way). I also thought he was chanting a mantra for the future. And like he was looking at the view from a place far away from the earth. I felt, once again, that this powerful fusion and relation of a bird's-eye perspective and emotion is what poetry is all about.

What have we been able to awaken since then? What is the new American identity? I chose this poem in the hope that in this current dichotomized situation, we can look back again at the scene he left us in the form of this poem and that it is a good suggestion of what context we have crossed. We are still, and yet, IRON HORSES.

His voice still has a powerful living wisdom

lyrics

“IRON HORSE”

The Universe is empty
The Universe is empty

“No time No time Sam Lewis—
Oh—No time nowCarolyn,
No time now, Neal.”

Na-mu sa-man-da mo-to-nan o-ha-ra-chi ko-to-sha so-no-nan to-ji-to en gya-gya gya-ki gya-ki un-nun shi-fu-ra shi-fu-ra ha-ra-shi-fu-ra ha-ra-chi-fu-ra chi-shu-sa chi-chu-sa shu-shi-ri shu-shi-ri so-ha-ja so-ba-ja se-chi-gya shi-ri-ei so-mo-ko

Morning, crossing New Mexico border
massive cliff waves
on earth mid-America—
hill north with yellow tipis trading post and gas stations rare
Indian center of America — Gallup ahead
I’d like to live here, a blessing
these cliffs under the shimmer-
ing consciousness of LSD.

Passing through the plain line level everywhere, fenced flat,
horizon gray fleeced with cloud haze
bringing blue where Gemini men walked in space that day—

Na-mu sa-man-da mo-to-nan o-ha-ra-chi ko-to-sha so-no-nan to-ji-to en gya-gya gya-ki gya-ki un-nun shi-fu-ra shi-fu-ra ha-ra-shi-fu-ra ha-ra-chi-fu-ra chi-shu-sa chi-chu-sa shu-shi-ri shu-shi-ri so-ha-ja so-ba-ja se-chi-gya shi-ri-ei so-mo-ko”

And ninety-nine soldiers piled on the train at Amarillo—
Hadn’t read the paper four weeks
training Air Force
Pneumohydraulics
—Ninety-nine soldiers entering the train
and all so friendly
Only a month
hair clipped & insulted
They weren’t too sad,
glad going to some electronics field near Chicago
—Been taking courses in Propaganda,
How not to believe what they were told
by the enemy,
Young fellas that some of them had long hair
before they came to the heated camp
friendly, over hamburgers
Volunteered
assignments behind the line of Great Machines
that drop Napalm,
milking
the Calf of Gold.
Three months from now
Vietnam, they said.

Walking the length of the train,
Lounge Car with Time Magazine
Amarillo Globe, US News & World Report
Reader’s Digest Coronet Universal Railroad Schedule,
everyone on the same track,
bound leatherette read on sofas,
America heartland passing flat
trees rising in night—
Dining Car — one lamb chop $2.75

Na-mu sa-man-da mo-to-nan o-ha-ra-chi ko-to-sha so-no-nan to-ji-to en gya-gya gya-ki gya-ki un-nun shi-fu-ra shi-fu-ra ha-ra-shi-fu-ra ha-ra-chi-fu-ra chi-shu-sa chi-chu-sa shu-shi-ri shu-shi-ri so-ha-ja so-ba-ja se-chi-gya shi-ri-ei so-mo-ko”
