about
Hum Bom notes:
Long admirers of Allen’s work, we were lucky to spend time in his company over the years. Re-reading The Fall of America during this past Covid-19, POTUS-45 summer of 2020, similarities to our current situation were pronounced. Allen, himself isolated in VW bus across multiple Amerika roadtrips, absorbing radio news, dj blather, three minute pop symphonies, highway visions and mania of Nixon/Watergate, orating into reel tape machine, most modern of poetic tools. Hum Bom most rhythmic anthemic rhyme-song pome of the collection, summoning gods, monsters, anger, indignation and bafflement at Military Industrial menace.
We were lucky, charmed, to have Allen intersect with our Sonic lives in downtown NYC, our band name gracing his 1995 poem “Newt Gingrich Declares War on “McGovernik Counterculture”, his ringing our phone to talk of recording together. “It may be interesting to improvise” we said. “That’s what Dylan wanted” he countered. Allen visiting us when playing outdoors in 95 on Randalls Island with Patti returning to the stage sharing our tiny dressing room trailer. In ‘97 Allen would move on to other planets, a year hence we’d sing out to him “Hits Of Sunshine” - sonic meditation in resistance to Nova Police - hum bom hum bom hum bom.....

Renowned poet, world traveler, spiritual seeker, founding member of a major literary movement, champion of human and civil
rights, photographer and songwriter, political gadfly, teacher and co-founder of a poetics school. Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) defied simple classification.
Ginsberg parlayed his fame and network of connections into a modestly successful career in music....more
Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain

Sonic Youth is one of those bands where you easily run out of superlatives to describe what they created. This could've easily come off as a cynical cash-grab by a band that had broken up 11 years prior to the release of this record, but that's not what this is. Some of my favourite Sonic Youth instrumentals. sentient meat
